I came across this post mentioning Aer Lingus and it reminded me of a very happy weekend I spent at Connemara back in May 1978. I was a member of the Irish boys team that played in the Aer Lingus International Schools Championship Final at Connemara. I could write a book about the wonderful welcome and support we got from Aer Lingus and from Fr. Waldron and your members. The course was a fantastic challenge but we came up a little short, in 3rd place. However, our experience stood us in good stead and we won the event outright the following year in Baltray. I went back to Connemara one weekend in 1980 when I was training for a job in Galway and was hitching out to the course from Clifden with my clubs on my back when I got picked up by a black Mercedes State car being driven by a Government Minister and his political advisor. We played 9 holes together and then hey retired to the bar to plot their next move against the Boss, while I played the second nine alone. I then hitched back to Clifden and in the middle of a deluge I was picked up by a lady who was driving a car with no windscreen wipers (she had one in the side pocket, though, which she used from time to time when things got really bad by winding down the window). The passenger seat wasn't fastened to the floor either. It really was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous! Anyway I have very happy memories of Connemara and look forward to playing there again sometime and to seeing your new 9 holes, which I imagine must be spectacular.
